Located within the Dominion Hotel’s confines, the Lamplighter Pub claims its fame as one of Vancouver’s vintage watering holes, dating back to 1899. Not only does it boast age-old architecture and charm, but it also stands as a symbol of progressive times, being the first to serve women alcohol in the city. Its name pays homage to the hardworking individuals who would light the streets of Vancouver in the late 19th century.
Mysteries at the Bar
But history isn’t the only intriguing aspect of the Lamplighter Pub; it also plays host to unexplained occurrences that chill the bones of even the most skeptical visitors. On a quiet night, after the last patron had left, a bouncer found himself questioning reality. The distinct sound of wine glasses, as if nudged by a deliberate hand, broke the silence. Yet, on investigation, they hung still, untouched.
On another night, defying the laws of physics, a glass took a flight of fancy, levitating off the bar only to shatter upon impact with the ground.
The Mannequin’s Tale
But perhaps the most eerie of tales involves an old sleigh perched high above the pub’s entrance, which once bore a mannequin passenger. To the astonishment of several servers, this inanimate figure was seen moving of its own accord, more than once.
