Hycroft Manor’s Haunted Legacy

Hycroft Manor’s Ghost Story

Tucked within the posh confines of Shaughnessy, Hycroft Manor stands as a testament to Vancouver’s storied past. With its stately architecture and rich history, it’s not surprising that it also boasts tales of spectral inhabitants.

A Home for the Elite
The grandeur of Hycroft Manor began under the stewardship of General Alexander Duncan McRae, a figure of repute from World War I, business, and politics. Under the General and his wife, Blanche McRae, the mansion echoed with the sounds of high society gatherings. The famous New Year’s Eve masquerade balls were the talk of Vancouver, hosting figures ranging from royalty to political stalwarts.

A Gift and Transition
In a gesture of patriotic benevolence, the McRaes bequeathed the manor to the Canadian Government in 1942. The space, rich in memories of opulent parties, soon bore witness to the pain and recovery of war veterans, serving as their convalescent abode. The demise of Mrs. McRae soon after the manor’s donation and General McRae’s death in 1946 marked the end of an era.

Resurrection
Left desolate after its stint as a hospital, Hycroft Manor’s resurrection came through the University Women’s Club of Vancouver in 1962. Their meticulous efforts restored the mansion’s former grandeur, and it once again played host, albeit to a different kind of gathering – from club meetings to weddings and special events.

The Manor’s Ethereal Inhabitants
A place with such rich history is bound to have a few lingering souls, and Hycroft Manor doesn’t disappoint. Among its spectral residents:

  1. General McRae himself, donning his WWI officer’s uniform, casts a watchful eye over his once-beloved residence.
  2. The elegant Mrs. McRae, still gracing the manor with her presence.
  3. A dedicated nurse from the manor’s days as a convalescent home.
  4. The Pranksters, three veteran spirits, still enjoying their stay, playfully interacting with the manor’s infrastructure.
  5. The enigmatic “Crying Man”, whose sorrowful echoes permeate the lower floors, reminds us of tales untold.

It’s not just apparitions that hold court here. A paranormal researcher once witnessed an unexplainable black orb, the size of a football, making a brief appearance over a dining table.

While some might find the idea of sharing space with these spectral inhabitants unsettling, the UWCV views them differently. To them, these spirits are guardians, watching over the manor with a benign intent, ensuring its legacy continues for years to come.
