MKUltra, the mind control operation
MKUltra was a covert, illegal CIA project aimed at developing techniques for mind control. Officially sanctioned in 1953, it was part of a larger program known as Project ARTICHOKE.
The primary goal was to discover methods to manipulate mental states and alter brain functions, with the hope of developing tools for interrogation and potentially for controlling human behaviour.
Several methods were tested in MKUltra, including the administration of drugs (especially LSD), hypnosis, sensory deprivation, isolation, verbal and sexual abuse, as well as various forms of torture.
The subjects of these experiments often participated without their knowledge or consent, a fact that later led to significant public and legal controversy.
The project was reduced in scope in 1964, curtailed further in 1967, and officially halted in 1973.
It came to public attention in 1975 through investigations by the Church Committee of the U.S. Congress and a presidential commission known as the Rockefeller Commission.
These investigations, along with a Freedom of Information Act request, uncovered a cache of 20,000 documents related to MKUltra, revealing the extent of the program.
The ethical, legal, and scientific violations associated with MKUltra were profound, and the project remains a stark example of government overreach and abuse of power in the context of Cold War-era research and intelligence activities.
Operation Midnight Climax
Operation Midnight Climax was a covert project that operated as a part of the CIA’s MKUltra program in the 1950s and 1960s.
This operation involved the use of brothels in San Francisco, New York City, and possibly other cities to study the effects of LSD on unconsenting individuals.
Essentially, it was a part of the broader efforts to understand and develop techniques for mind control and interrogation.

- Establishment of Safehouses: The CIA set up “safehouses” which were, in reality, brothels. These locations were equipped with one-way mirrors and recording equipment.
- Administration of LSD: Men who visited these brothels were unknowingly dosed with LSD (and sometimes other substances) by CIA operatives. The operatives would then observe the effects of the drug on these individuals from behind the one-way mirrors.
- Study of Behavior: The goal was to study the effects of LSD on unsuspecting individuals and to learn if it could be used as a tool for interrogation or mind control. The subjects’ behavior was observed and recorded, often without any medical supervision or concern for their safety.
- Problems and Legal Issues: This operation raised significant ethical and legal issues, as it involved non-consensual drug administration and a blatant violation of individuals’ rights. Moreover, the use of brothels and the lack of oversight in the experiment’s conduct were also highly problematic.
Operation Midnight Climax was eventually discontinued, and its existence, along with other MKUltra activities, came to light in the 1970s during the investigations by the Church Committee and the Rockefeller Commission.
The operation is often cited as an example of governmental abuse of power in the context of intelligence and research activities during the Cold War.
The Astral Projection

The Acoustic Kitty
The Acoustic Kitty was an absurd CIA operation of the 1960s that wanted to use cats for espionage. They surgically implanted cats with microphones and radio transmitters to secretly listen through enemy walls. Unfortunately, cats are near impossible to train. In tests, the cats predictably just wanted food and wandered off mission. On its first real task, one kitty spy infamously got hit by a car! Between the stupid concept and the animal welfare issues involved, it became an over-the-top failed Cold War scheme costing millions until cancellation. While creative, it showed the sillier lengths the spy game supposedly pushed people to.
Acoustic Kitty was a creative but ultimately unsuccessful attempt by the CIA to use cats for spying purposes. The project has since become a somewhat humorous footnote in the history of espionage, illustrating the lengths to which intelligence agencies would go during the Cold War.
